Kids are back to school, spooky season is in full swing, and retailers are breaking out the Christmas decorations – you know what that means! That’s right, it means flu season is coming. Sniffles and cold sweats are tricky enough to deal with under normal circumstances, but when you have Invisalign aligners, dodging germs can be a bit trickier. Remember these four tips so you can avoid the rogue viruses about to be set loose.
A Weakened Immune System is No Good (So Brush!)
When viruses go viral, your immune system has to work overtime – increasing your odds of, you know, getting sick. When your immunity is struggling, it’s easier for harmful oral bacteria to cause all kinds of problems, like gum disease and tooth decay. You might not want to get out of bed, but brushing your teeth twice daily will be more important than ever for mitigating bacteria growth!
Hands Off Your Aligners
At some point, you are going to have to remove and reinsert your Invisalign aligners. What you should avoid, though, is touching them with germy hands. Make sure to wash your digits before handling your aligners, and you should reduce your odds of introducing icky bacteria to your oral biome.
Stay Hydrated
H2O is important for helping your body function, which makes it essential for fighting off sickness. Your aligners, however, could dry out your mouth, and the crisp air could chap your lips. A water bottle marked with the time can help you stay hydrated throughout the day, and a good brand of lip balm will keep your lips moist and comfortable.
Take Care of Your Aligners
Invisalign aligners can accumulate bacteria just as easily as your teeth, especially if you leave them on a countertop (or anything other than their case!). During flu season, germs are even more abundant than usual, so it’s extra important to clean your aligners regularly, soak them in a sanitizing solution, and avoid placing them on potentially contaminated surfaces.
Surviving flu season with Invisalign requires a bit more care, but it essentially comes down to mindfulness. Be wary of contagious bacteria you might pick up from your surroundings and maintain a sanitary environment. If you’re dedicated, you can make it to the spring completely unscathed!
